Local independent investigations

When the outcome has to hold up, the investigation has to stand up.

When a serious complaint or incident lands, employers need an investigation that stands up. In-house teams are conflicted. Mainland firms mean cost, delay, and no local knowledge.

Richards Six Investigations is a local, independent practice run by a former Tasmania Police investigator with a Diploma of Work Health and Safety. One discipline, applied to two problems: workplace conduct and workplace safety.

  • Independent and impartial. No conflict with your business.
  • Investigator-led. Evidence and fair process are the craft, not an add-on.
  • Local. Based in northern Tasmania, faster and closer than a mainland firm.

What I investigate

Every engagement delivers the same thing: a thorough, impartial investigation and a clear written report. Allegations or facts are put, responses are obtained, evidence is weighed on the balance of probabilities, and findings are stated plainly and tied to the evidence.

Conduct and complaint investigations

Independent investigation of complaints about behaviour at work, including:

  • Bullying and harassment
  • Sexual harassment
  • Discrimination
  • Fraud, theft, and misuse of position
  • Breaches of a code of conduct or workplace policy
  • Psychosocial hazard complaints, aligned to current work health and safety obligations

Safety and compliance investigations

Independent investigation of workplace incidents and alleged breaches, including:

  • Serious safety incidents, including matters where SafeWork Tasmania interest, a coronial process, or litigation may follow
  • Contributing-factor and root-cause analysis grounded in evidence, not assumption
  • Alleged breaches of regulatory or compliance obligations

On request

Available where they support a matter or a client need:

  • Work health and safety compliance auditing and gap assessment
  • Pre-employment and senior-hire background verification: employment history, qualifications, and credentials
  • Skip tracing to locate witnesses or other people relevant to a matter

Not sure which applies, or whether a matter needs an external investigator at all? Ask. A short conversation usually makes it clear.

A clear process, start to finish

Independence and fair process are what make findings defensible. Here is how a matter runs.

1

Scope

We agree the allegations or the incident, the terms of reference, and what the report needs to deliver. You know the cost and the timeframe before work begins.

2

Investigate

Interviews, document review, and evidence gathering. Allegations are put to the respondent in writing, with a genuine opportunity to respond. Every step is recorded.

3

Report

A written report setting out the evidence, the process followed, and findings made on the balance of probabilities. Clear enough to act on, thorough enough to withstand challenge.

What stays with you: the decision. I investigate and make findings. The disciplinary or operational outcome is yours. That separation is what keeps the investigation independent, and keeps it defensible if it is later tested.

Who you're dealing with

I'm Andrew, a former Tasmania Police investigator with 18 years of investigative experience, now running an independent investigation practice in northern Tasmania.

Most workplace investigators come from a human resources or legal background and learn the investigative craft second. My background is the reverse. Gathering evidence, conducting fair interviews, weighing what stands up, and writing findings that survive scrutiny is the work I have done for years. A Certificate III in Investigative Services and a Diploma of Work Health and Safety back that experience with formal qualification.

I built Richards Six Investigations because Tasmanian employers deserve a local, independent option: someone close enough to respond quickly and know the ground, and independent enough that the findings mean something.

How I work

Independence

I have no stake in your outcome. I am engaged to find what happened, not to reach a predetermined answer.

Procedural fairness

Allegations are put clearly. Everyone involved gets a genuine opportunity to respond. Findings follow the evidence.

Evidence, weighed properly

Findings are made on the balance of probabilities and tied to the evidence that supports them.

Confidentiality

Sensitive information is handled carefully, stored securely, held only as long as needed, and shared only with those entitled to it.

Defensibility

The report is written on the assumption it may later be read by a lawyer, commission, or court.

Who engages an independent investigator

Employers and business owners

For serious complaints or incidents that need to be handled properly, without internal conflict.

HR managers and consultants

For matters where external independence is needed because the issue cannot be investigated in-house.

Employment and workplace lawyers

For rigorous, well-documented investigation work that supports legal advice.

Safety and operations managers

For serious incidents where independence and evidentiary rigour matter.

Local government and public-sector bodies

For conduct, integrity, and accountability obligations.

Based in northern Tasmania and available across the region.

Common questions

Do you decide the outcome or the penalty?

No. I investigate and make findings on the balance of probabilities. Decisions about discipline or action stay with you. Keeping those separate is what protects the investigation's independence.

How long does an investigation take?

It depends on the number of allegations, witnesses, and documents. I give you an estimated timeframe at the scoping stage and keep you updated. Local presence usually means a faster start than a mainland firm.

What does it cost?

Engagements are quoted per matter, either fixed-scope or at a day rate, agreed before work begins. You will not be surprised by the invoice.

How do you keep it confidential?

Information is handled on a need-to-know basis, stored securely, and retained only as long as necessary. Confidentiality expectations are set with everyone involved at the outset.

Are you independent if we're paying you?

Yes. I am engaged to establish facts, not to deliver a preferred result. My professional standing depends on findings that are sound, and a report that reaches a predetermined answer is worthless to you the moment it is challenged.

What areas do you cover?

Northern Tasmania primarily, with the rest of the state by arrangement.
